Alpine Mentoring: The Programs.
Alpine Mentoring offers two courses depending on skill level:
Course A: Essential Alpine Skills is an introductory course for novice mountain climbers
Course B: Advanced Mountain Craft is for those with climbing experience.
There is also the option to customize courses to refine or better develop your skills.
Course A: Essential Alpine Skills
Essential Alpine Skills will prepare you physically, mentally and emotionally for the rigors of high alpine travel and teach the skills needed to enjoy being there. Climbers, trekkers, backcountry skiers – anyone venturing above treeline overnight – will benefit from this course.
Three areas are covered in the Essential Alpine Skills course:
- mountain movement
- bivouac and camping essentials
- mountain attitude
By experiencing each of these areas, you will gain the skills and understanding that have been the domain of the elite alpinist. Gear, nutrition, preparation, and utilizing group strengths will be subjects that seamlessly blend into this three day course.

Course B: Advanced Mountain Craft
Advanced Mountain Craft strives to build the necessary skills and attitudes needed to be self-sufficient and more in control on mountain climbing trips. It is specifically designed for those who already started climbing, have a passion for more ambitious climbing routes, or simply want to reduce the learning curve for advanced routes. It can be tailored to prepare your group for any upcoming trip.
This five-day intensive, advanced mountaineering course will cover three areas:
- training the body
- training the mind
- learning to use the collective strengths and weaknesses in your group to have a safer, relaxed and rewarding trip.
Gear, nutrition, preparation and movement in the mountains are just some of the ancillary subjects that this course will cover. Knowledge gained from this course will not only help you to achieve your mountaineering goals, but will enhance any other endeavor you practice.

Custom Coursework
Alpine Mentoring offers instruction in all aspects of technical climbing. There are no set classes. This instruction is based solely on the individual’s needs. Is there an upcoming trip that will require skill sets that you are lacking? Are you very skilled in some aspects of alpine climbing and sorely lacking in others?
